The Road to Canterbury
copyright 2004 Mary Bertke

Seven years I’ve set aside
My singing and my dancing
Seven years I’ve sat and sewed
Forsaken my romancing
Tomorrow I will mount and ride
I will no longer tarry
I’m setting out from Bath
Along the Road to Canterbury

Well, I’ve a gap between my teeth,
That fault it does not blight me
They say it makes a lusty dame
Who always will delight ye
And aye, I have a pretty face
With grace I catch and carry
And I’m setting off from Bath
Along the road to Canterbury

Bridge:
One for fortune, one for fame
One for love, they’re all the same
Only ask me for my name
An ye wish to marry

I shall a better husband find
Than all the ones before
Better lover, kinder friend
With greater gold in store
God grant that an I find true love
He’ll be the last I bury
For I’m setting off from Bath
Along the road to Canterbury.
