Piece of Heart
Copyright 2004 Mary Bertke

I cannot love you, heart and soul, I tell you, as I live,

I cannot give my heart to you – it isn’t mine to give

It wasn’t stolen, wasn’t bartered, wasn’t bought and wasn’t sold

I admit I gave it freely – I was just fourteen years old

Just a little piece of heart that I gave to him

Just a piece of soul that I may never see again

I thought that I could take it back, but here’s the bitter pill:

He never gave a piece of his – and I love against my will

How can love, once given, without a piece of love returned

Be complete and trusting – with passion truly burn?

I may love too easily, too quickly show my heart

I give my secrets freely and it may tear me apart.

Note:  No, I'm not really that depressed.   This song almost didn't get completed except that I ran across the tune that came with the original idea.  It's a fine old torch song.
