Sky Full of Stars
copyright 1996 Mary Bertke

        D                                     C

The city lights are beautiful as I sit upon the hill,

    D                     C

a barge whistles, music to my ears.

    D                                            C

I think about my ancestors, their trials and their scars,

          C                                  D

when they still had hope and a sky full of stars.

My grandma used to tell me how she used to wish on stars,

be they shooting or the first star of the night.

She said she wished to join them when she slept her final night,

but how is she to get beyond the glow of neon lights?

Bridge:

      D                                                C

For it was in my mother's time some people formed a plan

    D                                                    C

to fill the midnight sky with man-made light.

               D                                           C

That we need not fear dark alleys, or the ills that come from darkness,

              D                       C                   D

and we never dream up monsters in the night.

My life has lost direction and I don't know where to go,

and grandma's North Star lingers in my mind.

I want to find a purpose, and the strength to conquer bars,

and I long for the hope of a sky full of stars!
