Dreams Remembered
copyright 1998 Mary Bertke

      D                         A          D

I knew more then than I know now

      A       D            G     A
of who I was, what I’d allow.

     D                             A           D
I sang and dreamed of when I’d leave

         A         D         A
and make my life someday.

And now I’m here, I’ve got a home,
I’ve got my banjo and a drum.
A man to love, and a song to sing,
and yet—they don’t mean anything.

Bridge:

        D                       G
I’ve let my sights fall from the skies,

           D                          G
If a dream’s untouched, away it flies.

        D                              G
I’m not the woman that I wanted to be—

               D                                    G                    A
What happened to the dreams that used to set me free?

So I sat down and I worked it out,
who I am, what I care about.
I made my plans and I set my goal
to find my dreams and win back my soul.

Bridge:
I’ll pretend I’m the woman that I want to be,
who’s loving and giving and works for freedom,
Dreaming of things as I want them to be

Until the things that I dream become part of me.

               D                       A            D

A little more each day, I’ll live my dreams,

A        D          G             A
bit by bit I’ll stretch my wings.

        D                           A           D
I’ll give a cheer when at last I’ve flown,

               A                    D               G   A     D
Then I’ll look back and stare at how far I've come.
